"Upon receiving my IDC certificate I experienced a sense of
pride. It validates the importance of an Early Childhood Director’s job. It
recognizes the accumulation of education and experience that has been important
to me in providing quality services to young children."

I think that I have always known that I wanted to work with children, especially
young children. When I first attended Northern Illinois University I was headed
to receive a teaching degree, with plans to make teaching elementary school age
children my career. At the time there was an overabundance of teachers and I
became concerned about whether I would find a job. During a casual conversation
a friend asked me the following question. “Have you ever thought about teaching
“nursery school”? My response was “There is such a career?” That was all it
took for me and I was on my way to a career I have had for over 25 years.
After graduating from college I started my career in early childhood at The
Growing Place Child Care Center in DeKalb as a four year olds teacher.
I progressed to Site Director and then to Program Director over several
facilities. I attribute my supervisory and management skills to Mrs. Betty
Drake, the owner and Executive Director at The Growing Place.
A change to my husband’s career brought us to Bloomington, IL. Due to starting a
family I continued my career as a home provider, but missed the hustle and
bustle of a childcare facility. In 1988 I took my present position with Bloomington
Day Care, Inc. as Executive Director, which is my “home away from
home” today.
